“I actually know [the managers] that own the Hotel Elephant. And they were really nice ... I live nearby, and before I graduated I was looking for a studio space because I really didn't want to lose momentum [...] So I just called [them] and asked if they had any free studios. And I was quite lucky that they had one available.”

“[This space] is really good because it's so central as well, and I can get to everywhere, and it's close to my house, and I really like the area as well.”

“This studio space is perfect because it's small and I don't tend to work, like, really big. And I work at a desk anyway when I'm painting. I don't paint on the walls or anything. So for me, it's quite good.”

“This studio space is actually a quiet studio space. So you just can't be super loud, because this studio space is a mixture between graphists and fine artists, and like, designers. So next door, they have the loud studio space, but when I was renting they didn't actually have any available in there. But that's where, like, you can make loads of noise. So it's actually so different as well. If you go in there, it's exactly the same but it's like a totally [different] vibe because it's like, really messy. It feels more like an artists' studio.”

“this studio space is like really good because you get to meet a lot of people. Like, the book that I'm working on is with another artist that is here as well. So you get a lot of connections. And also they have the hot desk thing next door”

“I know a lot of people that I graduated with, they're in a few studio spaces and it's like, a lot of them are, like, in abandoned or like... buildings that are waiting for planning permission, and it's temporary. Whereas here, it's a permanent building. So like, you don't have that worry of like, having to find somewhere. Because the contracts are like, rolling contracts. So literally, like, within a month you could be asked to leave, and then you wouldn’t have anywhere to work. Whereas here, it's like, it's like you don't have that kind of worry.”

“Here, we do like, Open Studios twice a year and ... like, last week we had an exhibition on at the cafe and stuff like that. So, they [the managers] do, like, a really good job of [creating a community].”

“I use social media a lot [...] I'm doing an exhibition in London Bridge next month, and the way they found me was on social media as well. So a lot of it [my work] is social media-based.”

“[The] exhibitions that I do now, I don't pay for anything. So you don't really lose anything from doing them ... well most of the time actually, you have to pay for exhibitions and you have to pay to put it on, you have to pay for, like, the venue and everything. But now ... as long as I make... sell enough to pay for this, then I feel okay. It's not like I'm making a loss. Because I don't mind not making.”

“Some of the changes [in the area] are good. Like for example, this studio and stuff like that. These sort of spaces, like community spaces, are good. But like, the gentrification of all the houses, the new flats and stuff [...] the rent in the area's increasing, and ... less than a month, two months ago, I actually had to move.”

“I have not really adapted this space to be honest. I just put my desk here. [The managers] are really relaxed. Like, you can just do kind of whatever you want. Like, they don't limit you ... like you can't mess up the walls or something, they don't say anything like that. Like, you can do anything you want, so long as that when you leave, you kind of leave it as clean as possible.”

“I would probably move to somewhere [else] if in the future I had more projects to work on and more exhibitions. I would need a bit of a bigger space. But at the moment I really like this space.”

“They [the managers] have a cleaner that comes every Sunday. So like they mop and put toilet rolls in the toilets so you don't have to worry about anything like that. It's just your own personal space that you manage yourself.”

“The only thing with this studio space that I think some people might have a problem with is, like, there's no windows. But I don't work with any solvents so I don't have any sort of smelly... like, turpentine or anything like that.”
