Key dates

1830

The building was formerly used as a furniture store (Barras Bargain Centre), and abandoned for a couple of years.

2012

Glasgow City Council provided Calton Barras Action Plan, which outlines the growth of creative and craft industries as a key driver of the local economy in the area, proposing a strategy to rebrand The Barras as an artistic quarter.

2014

Glasgow City Council launched The Barras Vacant and Underused Floorspace Grant Fund scheme, releasing capital funding for several refurbishment projects to existing buildings with the aim to increase socio-economic activity through the provision of artists’ studios, craft markets, and event/gallery spaces. The Space, among four other initiatives, received this art-led public funding.

2017

The Scottish charitable incorporated organisation 'People Without Labels' restored the building through the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) from Keep Scotland Beautiful, with the help of volunteers and made venues available for music, dance, arts, food as well as learning and workshops.

The Scottish charitable incorporated organisation, named People Without Labels, rented a former furniture store to initiate a community venue for art and culture. There are music venues and spaces for community use on the ground floor of the building and the three top floors have been adapted into artists’ coworking spaces.

A Pay What You Decide cafe offers sustenance and support to locals in line with the Space's mission to address homelessness, poverty and social isolation in the community .

The loose management has provided the liberty for the occupants to be creative and make a functional space. Rent is negotiated informally with the managers on a basis of relative studio size.

The studio spaces are divided on an ad hoc basis and are individual units in an open floor plan, divided by self built plywood partitions.
