“I chose this space because of its price and size. I need a lot of space to do what I do and this was by far the biggest and cheapest I could find.”

“At the moment, I’m doing a product project with a furnace; I melt aluminum cans and I cast them. I can’t do it inside the space but luckily there is a way I can get out to the parking lot and do it there. So they [the managers] open up the emergency exit for me, and then I can do it. ”

“There’s always, most of the week, people in the living room and they’re always happy to help, whenever. Sometimes the managers of the space are there, sometimes I contact them.”

“Well, since this is a really large space and it’s all shared, it’s really cold in the winter. But I thought I can complain about how cold it is, I can [also] pay a lot more money [for a better place], or I can box myself in. So I just was proactive and decided to make a greenhouse out of my old space. It worked really well.”

“Some people know each other from school. Some have been here longer, some get along really well. [But] no! I don’t feel like a sense of community [here].”

“I get all my tools locked up but it’s also just because we’re in quite a rough area [in the Barras].”

“It [the location of the Barras] helps if you need to get to, cause it’s a five minute walk into the city centre and there’s art shops there and any other shop you might ever need. ”

“[I exhibited my work at] New Glasgow Society, but self-organised. I have social media, and what besides. So yeah! I do all those things. Not too active though. But yeah! I have that, definitely.”

“They’ve raised the prices as well, which is why I’m sticking to this space, cause as soon as you move, you pay more. And ideally, I would have a ground floor space, bigger, but for now, I’m good where I am.”

“I would have a ground floor space [because] It’s just easier to access and to bring stuff up.”

“I’m from the Netherlands and I had my own art studio in the Netherlands for about five years. But in the Netherlands, we have, squatting [which] is legal. So, we have a lot of anti-squatting agencies, which they rent out empty buildings, mostly to artists. But I had a whole floor like this for myself for not even what I’m paying here, for this space. So, to me, that’s a major adjustment, it’s my new […] way of doing things.”

“I think the size of the space has affected my work because I make three-dimensional things, and I would love to make bigger, wilder things, and just to have the space to leave it as well, not have to store everything, or try to sell it as quickly as I can.”
