Key dates

1995

The Dovehill Studios, located in The Barras area on East Campbell Street, was the first building purchased by Wasps (Workshop & Artists Studio Provision Scotland) a charity that provides affordable studios to support artists, arts organisations, and creative businesses across Scotland. The building inhabits the former Ironworks foundry and provides 38 studios over 3 floors.

2012

Glasgow City Council provided Calton Barras Action Plan, which outlines the growth of creative and craft industries as a key driver of the local economy in the area, proposing a strategy to rebrand The Barras as an artistic quarter.

2015

The ground floor of the building on East Campbell Street plus three more units on the Gallowgate high street were refurbished by two brothers with a family history in The Barras to introduce and facilitate micro-entrepreneurship in the area.

The largest part of Glasgow Collective inhabits the ground floor of a former Iron works foundry, a substantial red brick form built in 1792 as part of the Saracen Ironworks Foundry.

Glasgow Collective resides across 4 adjoining buildings. The three units near the main building are located on Gallowgate Street, just opposite to the Barrowland Ballroom.

As part of designing flexible spaces, there is an incubator pod for small businesses, meetings, phone calls, and interviews, shared between all businesses to book and use.

By removing the old dividing walls in the main building, the space frees for possible events, meetings, and hotdesking.
